In my point of view search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality traffic on a web site from search engines via organic or inorganic SEO. Basically there are two types of SEO process:

1. On-page: Creation of Meta tags, Keyword research and find out which part of site is not user-friendly like content of site, design of site including color of text, background picture, header & footer of website.

2. Off-page: Article Submissions, Directory Submissions, Link Building, E-book creation and submissions.
